The story behind the name, who's building it, and what it's for.
Daedalus was the greatest craftsman of the ancient world.
He invented flight. He shaped the tools that working hands still use — the saw, the axe, the plumb line. He raised the first lifelike statues out of stone, and the principles of building he set down became the foundations of European craft. The word daedalic — meaning skillfully made — comes from his name.
We took the name on purpose. This is software for people who make and fix real things, and we wanted it to carry the weight of that — a tool built with the same care its users bring to the bay.
Independent shops keep the country moving. The owner is the writer, the closer, the parts department, and half the time the tech — and the software is supposed to carry its share of that load. Most of it was designed a long way from the bay, and it shows.
We think the shop should own its shop. Its customers, its history, its numbers — all of it.
So Daedalus starts with the unglamorous, essential work: customers and vehicles, estimates and invoices, repair orders and payments, a customer portal that wears your name instead of ours, service history kept for the life of the vehicle. The day-to-day of running a shop, done properly, in one place — with your data exportable any time and backed up to storage only you control.
Fast, and close to the work. Daedalus didn't come out of years of roadmap meetings — it went from an empty page to running real shops in a matter of weeks, and it improves at the same pace. When a shop hits a problem in the morning, the fix usually ships the same day.
That speed isn't rushing. It's what building looks like when the person writing the software is the same person who answers when a shop calls — no ticket queue, no committee, nothing between the problem and the fix.
Good tools get better the way they always have: someone who uses them every day, refusing to let them stay dull.
Daedalus is built from inside the trade, not across the street from it — by a builder who has spent years around independent shops, writing estimates, chasing parts, and watching good techs wrestle software that fought them the whole way. That's the standard this product answers to: it has to hold up in a real bay, on a real Tuesday, with the phone ringing.
